Student Documents

Fort Scott (KS) Junior College Maroon, 1927

Few documents provide a better insight into the student culture of the early public junior college than the student annual. While now rarely published by community college students, such annuals were routinely published by the students of pre-war junior colleges. While the influence of the high school student annual is clear, so to is the aspiration of junior college students to present themselves as college students with wide-ranging cultural interests and as fully capable of enjoying the same activities of students at small, four-year colleges.

Moberly (MO) Junior College The Log, 1928

Moberly Area Community College has made this copy of their college’s first student annual available. Any use of this document requires the prior permission of the college. This permission can be requested through the college librarian.

While the publication of a junior college in its first year, the annual documents an institution that was, for its opening, a center of very active student life. The reader is especially encouraged to review the annual’s Calendar, beginning on page 58. It describes a student body that despite its small size enjoyed an extremely rich extra-curriculum. Immediately following the Calendar section is a page devoted to a description of the student’s St. Patrick’s day celebration. Oddly, the main course was creamed chicken, rather than corned beef. One can only speculate as to why the student’s departed from custom for what was clearly a significant social event.
