Commentary:

Gray was an important observer of the early junior college, especially with respect to its development in California, given his close relationship to the University of California’s Dean Lange, under whom Gray wrote his Master’s thesis. However, neither Gray’s article, reprinted here, nor his thesis approach Brooks’ thesis in either depth or scope, and should not be used as a definitive source without a simultaneous review of Brooks’ work.

In contrast to most other documents found on this site, Gray’s article has been embedded as a .pdf file. This has been done, and will be done with most future documents, to encourage graduate students, in keeping with the recommendation of the most recent APA style manual, to minimize the use of external texts in lieu of their own words. The conversion of this site to a greater reliance upon .pdf files is an attempt to further the recommendations of the APA manual.
